Watching my son try to write his first words, I realized something uncomfortable: I had completely forgotten how hard writing actually is. As an adult, writing feels automatic. But for young children, especially those who struggle, writing can feel overwhelming in ways that are hard to remember.
I’ve been digging into the research on early writing and developmental differences to give myself a clearer picture of what’s going on for kids when they are learning to write. This article isn’t about diagnosing problems or creating a checklist of concerns. It’s about a practice of empathy. And when I understand what my child might be experiencing, I can respond with more patience, choose better supports, and build his confidence, and my own.
So let me slow down and imagine what writing might actually feel like for kids.
Why Letters Might Look Confusing
You might notice this as getting letters mixed up, forgetting a letter they knew yesterday, or avoiding the activity due to overwhelm.
Imagine learning a completely new writing system, maybe Arabic, Hebrew, Chinese, or Korean characters. Every symbol is unfamiliar. Some look nearly identical with just tiny differences. Each character has a name and a sound to memorize.
It turns out that making sense of letters involves a few things happening at once:
- Connecting the symbol to a name and a sound (letter knowledge). This is pure memory work that comes from repetition.
- Holding onto what a letter looks like well enough to recognize it next time (visual memory).
- Distinguishing somewhat subtle differences between letters, like ‘c’ and ‘o’ or ‘n’ and ‘h’ (visual discrimination). It’s like playing “spot the difference” with every word.
Letters don’t seem to “stick” in memory at the same pace for all children. And the research shows that kids really do vary a lot (Ehri 2013). Some kids need more exposures before a letter becomes familiar.
Activity ideas
- Play Go Fish! with alphabet cards [US | CA]. We like to divide the deck and play with half the alphabet at a time to reduce overwhelm.
- Play DIB dab to practice visual memory and letter recognition. Every pair of cards has one letter in common and you race to find it!
- Do an alphabet hunt. Find specific letters around the room, on road signs, in the grocery store. This also comes in handy on long car trips.
- Make your child’s name with different materials: magnets [US | CA], stamps [US | CA], scrabble/bananagram tiles [US | CA], stickers, or my free name tracing worksheet

Why Holding a Pencil Might Feel Exhausting
I checked and there are about 30 muscles in your hand, and they’re all learning to work together to develop the fine motor skills for writing. Specifically:
- The muscles in the palm and fingers need to be strong enough to grip a pencil without cramping or getting tired quickly (hand strength).
- Each finger has to do something slightly different to control the pencil (motor coordination).
- Manipulating the pencil smoothly, adjusting pressure, making curves and straight lines (manual dexterity).
- Adjusting grip or repositioning the pencil without dropping it or stopping completely (in-hand manipulation).
With a tired hand, lines may be very faint, kids may lose interest after a few letters, or keep switching the way they hold their pencil.
Fine motor skills develop at different rates (Schneider et al. 2023). Some children’s hand muscles and coordination mature more slowly, which means their hands genuinely get tired faster. A mature pencil grasp typically develops between ages 4-6, but there’s wide variation in this timeline.

- Games like The Fuzzies [US | CA] or Noodle Knockout! [US | CA] that use tweezers
- Trying out a 3D printing pen [US | CA]. A fun and novel way to build up endurance holding a pen-like tool, by making 3D creations!
- Rolling “snakes”, pinching and making balls with therapy putty [US | CA] or playdough [US | CA]
- Trying different writing tools, like Waldorf crayons [US | CA] and short colored pencils [US | CA] to gently encourage correct pencil grip
- Keeping writing sessions short to give hands time to build up endurance

Why Letters Might Look Messy or Uneven
On top of the fine motor piece that describes what the hands are doing, there’s also how well the eyes and hands work as a team (visual-motor integration).
This involves seeing the letter clearly, planning the movement, coordinating hand movements to match what the eyes see. and then making constant tiny adjustments. This coordination develops gradually throughout early childhood. Visual-motor integration naturally improves with time and practice (Weil & Cunningham Amundson 2025).
Here are some activities that bring in that eye-hand connection through play

- Playing catch with koosh balls [US | CA] or bean bags [US | CA] to practice eye-hand coordination. (The koosh ball was a favorite for us but not all kids enjoy that sensory experience.)
- Balance activities, like playing with a rocking bowl [US | CA] or balance board [US | CA]
- Use highlighted double-lined paper [US | CA] for writing practice
- Crawling games, like “crawling tag” or playing with tunnels [US | CA]. Crawling is excellent for cross-body coordination and building shoulder stability.

Why You Might Spell Words Incorrectly
For my son, it looks like “io” to spell “arrow”, or “privaopde” for “private property.”
Now this is a fun one, because these kinds of misspellings are a really great sign. Researchers have a term for it: invented spelling, and it’s actually something they look for to predict future writing success (Rowe 2017).
Invented spelling is when a child attempts to spell a word using their own logic about how sounds connect to letters, before they know conventional spelling. It’s considered a really significant milestone in emergent writing because it’s direct evidence that a child understands the alphabetic principle: the foundational insight that letters represent sounds.
When children are encouraged to invent spellings, they actually develop stronger reading skills than children who are only exposed to correct spelling. The act of working out “what sound does this word start with, and what letter makes that sound?” strengthens the very capacities the writing research identifies as foundational.
While invented spelling is still beneficial as kids turn 6 and 7, the focus starts to shift towards conventional spelling at this age. And spelling continues to improve after that (Gosse et al 2021).

Why You Might Get ‘b’ and ‘d’ Mixed Up
When you stop to think about it, it’s a beautiful demonstration of how kids’ brains are powerful pattern finders. A cup is still a cup whether the handle points left or right or is flipped upside down. So, of course, the brain sensing a pattern would see ‘b’ and ‘d’ as equivalent. That they are different letters is actually arbitrary and something that has to be memorized.
Mixing up ‘b’ and ‘d’ is completely normal in early writing. (Other common mix-ups are p/q, g/q, n/u and m/w. ) Visual discrimination, the ability to notice small differences between similar shapes, is what helps us tell letters apart, and most children sort this out by around age 7 as their brains mature and they get more reading and writing practice (Fischer & Luxembourger 2018). Some children take longer, especially if they have differences in visual processing or less exposure to print.
Here are some things that have helped me and my son make letter encounters feel varied and low-key.

- Reading in low-pressure contexts. Books with varied, fun fonts like The Book With No Pictures [US | CA] or the Geronimo Stilton series [US | CA] can boost engagement with letters
- Make writing multi-sensory: making the letters with your body, tracing sandpaper letters [US | CA], writing them in sand, forming them with playdough [US | CA]
- Mnemonics or memory tricks, e.g. “b has a belly,” “d has a diaper”
- Books that specifically address letter reversals, like b and d are buddies [US | CA]

Why You Might Use an Unconventional Stroke Order
With everything else their brain is already managing (gripping the pencil, remembering what the letter looks like, planning and making precise movements), there is a lot demanding their focus. For new or struggling writers that don’t have automatic knowledge and muscle memory yet, the limits of what they can hold in their memory can get maxed out quickly.
It’s common for kids to come up with unconventional stroke order to write their letters. And it’s actually interesting: research suggests that for very beginning writers, self-directed stroke order might support letter learning better than following prescribed steps (Merritt et al 2020). When stroke order is strictly enforced, the added mental load can actually slow things down.
For older kids, following a more conventional and efficient stroke order does begin to matter — not for its own sake, but because well-practiced movement sequences eventually become automatic, freeing up mental energy for the much harder work of composing thoughts and sentences.
So what makes stroke order genuinely difficult to learn? It turns out it involves two separate things:
- Understanding where each part of the letter lives in space (spatial awareness). Is this stroke above the line or below? Does this curve open to the left or the right?
- Sequencing movements in the right order (motor planning). Forming the letter ‘d,’ for instance, means remembering to make a circle first, then add a tall line on the right — and not confusing it with ‘b’, which does the reverse.
Children vary enormously in how quickly movement sequences become automatic. And it’s not until age 9 or 10 that letter formation becomes second nature (Palmis et al 2017).
Here are some approaches I’ve come across that take the pressure off while still building that muscle memory.
Activity ideas:
- Prioritize low-pressure, playful practice that focuses on warm-ups and starting points rather than full stroke sequences. This is the approach used in my workbook, Letters I Can Write
- For children who are ready to learn stroke order, verbal cues and simple rhymes can make the sequence memorable: something like “big line down, little curve around”
- Build motor memory through multi-sensory practice; when the whole body is involved, the pattern tends to stick faster (e.g. making the letters with your body, tracing sandpaper letters [US | CA], writing them in sand, forming them with playdough [US | CA])

The Big Picture
Writing is complex. It draws on visual perception, memory, fine motor skills, spatial awareness, motor planning, and letter knowledge... all at once.
When kids struggle with writing, they’re working incredibly hard at skills that aren’t quite ready yet. And some children are managing additional layers (sensory processing, attention, coordination differences, demand sensitivity) that make the whole system even more challenging.
These skills develop with time, practice, and support. I’ve found that understanding what my child might be experiencing helped me:
- Have greater patience for the process
- Choose activities and materials that help
- Notice and celebrate the small progress that’s happening even when it’s not visible on paper yet
- Trust that development happens at different paces, and that’s okay
Your child is doing a great job. You're doing a great job. And now you have a clearer picture of just how much work goes into something that will eventually seem so simple, writing.
